The Next Step: Building a Photographic Project

1-day workshop with David H. Wells in Helsinki – Monday June 18th – € 195

There comes a point in the career of any serious photographer when a portfolio of strong, single pictures is just not enough and building a multi-image project on a single theme is the next big step. Join award-winning photographer David H. Wells in this workshop where participants will learn how to assemble a collection of images on one theme that are stylistically and thematically unified and then how to promote and disseminate it to a commercial, artistic or non-profit audience. The theme of such a project is the photographer’s choice and could vary from a series of landscape images unified by place or theme to a series of portraits linked by familial connection or common workplace. The possibilities are endless and the choice is up to each individual photographer to make. The project can be deeply personal or primarily commercial or something in between. In all cases, the best projects are those reflect the photographer’s personality and unique perspective. Participants should bring a SMALL portfolio of their work as David  will review it and then go through a series of exercises to help define the students’ own areas of interest. This will include explorations of different photographic styles, how to decide whether to work in B/W or color, what are the potential outlets for their work, etc. At the end of the workshop David will show you how to edit images with a clear vision. Through a series of exercises, he will train you to look at photographs analytically. He will also take a set of images from each participant, consisting of between 30 and 50 prints only (no digital files) and edit them down to a top twenty. Students leave the class with an education in photo editing AND a professionally executed edit that will cut their large set of images down to a final, tightly edited and clearly defined top twenty. The class is limited to 12 participants.
